Our team and mission
The Science and Operations Department is responsible for ensuring that maximum scientific return, within applicable constraints, is maintained as an objective for the Directorate’s missions through their lifetime, by providing scientific oversight of the Directorate’s missions throughout their lifecycle, managing and being responsible for the operation of the Directorate’s missions once successfully commissioned, and curating the scientific data in their legacy phase, while establishing and maintaining the necessary science interfaces to the community. These responsibilities are discharged in full coordination with the Directorate’s Departments and Offices and, as appropriate, with the Directorate of Operations.

The Mission Operations Division is responsible for all aspects of missions once they start science operations after completion of their in-flight commissioning phase (i.e. Phase E2 and beyond). As such, the division personnel takes care of operations and maintenance of the space and ground segments, in close collaboration with the Mission Operation Center (MOC) typically run by the Operations Directorate at ESOC, and the science community of the missions. The ground segment typically includes a Science Operations Center component deployed at ESAC and operated under direct responsibility of the Diviaion. The division also manages mission partnerships with other space agencies, and support contracts as required.

Field(s) of activity for the internship
Topic: Enhancement of HILIGT, an X-ray astronomy light curve generator.

As an intern, you will continue the development of a web-based application designed to return historical light-curves of astronomical objects. The tool, called HILIGT (HIgh-energy LIght curve GeneraTor), currently analyses data from many X-ray astronomy satellites. We wish to extend the tool in three ways:

1. Include important extra missions which are currently absent such as Chandra and RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer)
2. Integrate a fast access to XMM-Newton data from within the application
3. Help to integrate the tool into the ESASky environment.
From these three tasks you will gain detailed knowledge of some X-ray astronomy missions, a broad awareness of X-ray data analysis, practical programming skills in modern client-server software and the possibilities which are available within the multi-wavelength, ESASky package. Thhis is a project on the borderline between science and software development.
